Multilingualism: learn English and your home language, German and French or Spanish
At Danube our goal is that students will be multilingual, able to operate at a high academic level in both English and their home language(s). Our students also have the opportunity to develop high level German skills and learn French or Spanish as an additional language.
Danube students are multilingual:
Two thirds of our students gain bilingual IB Diplomas.
Students who take German B HL in the DP are able to reach level C1 on the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) and study in German at universities in Austria, Germany and Switzerland.
Students in grade 10 have the opportunity to take DELF exams in French and DELE in Spanish, and regularly attain level B1 in what for many is their fourth language.
English and English Language Development (ELD)

We have selective, high-level English Language and Literature classes in grades 6-10 for students of native speaker level or equivalent, and offer both English Literature and Language and Literature in the DP.
We also provide mainstream English Language Acquisition in small classes (average 10 students) for students in phases 1-5 of the MYP, and ELD as an additional class (during school time instead of taking French or Spanish; average 3 students) for those at the beginning of their English learning journey. ELD lessons incur an additional cost.
Privately Taught Languages (PTL): home language lessons with a qualified teacher during school time
While English serves as our core language of instruction, sustaining academic skills in the home language gives our students a crucial cognitive and cultural advantage.
It is compulsory to take at least one Language and Literature course in both the MYP and the DP. English and German are offered in every grade, and many students take their home language as a PTL with a tutor. We have a large pool of private language tutors, qualified teachers who are mostly able to teach their students in school as part of their normal timetable. There is an additional cost for PTL lessons.
